Where does the name "Shepherd" come from?

I bought Shepherd.com many years ago as I thought it was a great brand name for a future project. I love the feeling it evokes of discovery, exploration, and gentle guidance. I thought it was a perfect fit for book discovery. 

We don't have any religious affiliations or connotations. We are just about books and helping readers find great books while helping authors bump into new readers.
