Why do external links open in a new browser window?

Originally, I had external links open in the same window. I changed this on August 29th, 2022, so external links open in a new window. 

Why? 

I got feedback from many readers that they wanted to stay at Shepherd and open book links in separate tabs. That way, they felt less lost.
